“What is it to be civilized?” part 2

“The end of the human race will be that it will eventually die of civilization.”     -Ralph Waldo Emerson”

For people who don’t grasp the full concept of this idea I’ll try to illustrate to you the ‘self-destructive nature’ in development of mankind in this post briefly.  I’m assuming you have all read part 1.

An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions.-Definition of civilization I found online.

Intellect: The power of knowing as distinguished from the power to feel and to will : the capacity for knowledge. Definition I also found online.

Complex politcal and social  institutions’

These’institutions  have lead mankind to commit unthinkable atrocities including genocide and slavery. The Arawaks, and Caribs are no longer with us because of money. When I say money I mean anything that has value such as; rare earthly elements, ivory, cash crops and even land. Anything we put value to that corresponds with wealth and status is ‘money‘  your mind should be broad enough to let go of literal terms when sharing ideas.

That was in the 15th century, then later the Africans were enslaved because they were better suited to working in the tropical climates than the Amerindians and the European prisoners and who ever else came to work the cash crops. Not to mention the dessimation of the Native Americans.  I’ll focus on the Western World because that  is where I’m from but of course war, genocide and slavery affected other ethnicities and cultures all through time in the other parts of world as well; such as Turkey, Australia, Africa and even China.

Material development is being used negatively, yes technology is fun for everyone until we drop ‘atomic bombs’ on ourselves. The media is numbing, our food is less of food everyday, we are using mechanics when we sing and draw now, so anyone can be a singer or artist nowadays. The arts are being polluted. We  also polluted the earth to the point the atmosphere is being altered and we made so many species of animals extinct due to cruelty and sport.

We have different physical appearances, “variety is the spice of life'”that is what makes people so interesting but we are one race the human race. “So how do we rationalize dropping bombs on ourselves?”

‘Intellect’- of course we know all these negatives are happening but it all corresponds with civilizaiton. Racism, sexism, crime, poverty, war are all products of civilization.

Today we have created so many anti-biotics that germs and viruses has become so resistant that the common cold or a scratch on the knee could potentially be fatal. ( I saw this on a news report this week, I hope it’s an exaggeration)

“Now do you see what Ralph Emerson’s quote means?”

“But this is just the way I see it.” 🙂
